There are many types of collagen. The difference between them lies in their structure and in the functions they are supposed to provide in the body. Thanks to this diversity, each type is adapted to the specific needs of our body, which allows it to maintain its properties and functions in tissues and organs. The different variants are usually identified by Roman numerals from 1 to 28, depending on their location and role in the body. Therefore, it is difficult to answer which type of collagen is the best, but in this article we will take a closer look at the three most popular varieties – type I, type II and type III.

What is collagen and why is it important for the body?

Collagen is a protein substance that plays a key role in connective tissue. It occupies a leading place among the proteins found in the human body, accounting for as much as about 30% of their total content. Collagen is found in a variety of tissues – skin, bones, joint cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles and blood vessels. Regular collagen supplementation has a beneficial effect on, among other things:

Type III collagen

It is particularly important for the normal development of fetuses and infants, as it is a major component of the extracellular matrix in the skin and internal organs. The role of type III collagen in the body is mainly to maintain the elasticity and resilience of the tissues in which it is found. It is important for the condition of the skin, as it ensures its firmness, but also for the health of blood vessels, where it takes care of their elasticity.

Other types of collagen

  • collagen type IV – is important for the structure of basement membranes that play an important role in blood filtration and immunity,
  • Type VI collagen – plays an essential role in muscle structure,
  • Type X collagen – is crucial for the development of growth cartilage, which enables bone growth in children and adolescents, 
  • Type XXVII collagen – is involved in the processes of nerve network formation.

These are just some of the many examples that allow you to understand how many types of collagen are present in the body, and each of them plays an important and unique role for health, beautiful appearance and well-being.
